Answering service for home services

The call you couldn’t take
became someone else’s job.

You are under a sink, on a roof, or driving between calls when the phone rings. It goes to voicemail, the homeowner taps the next result on the map, and that job is gone. fonea answers in seconds with your company name, sorts the no-heat emergency from the routine estimate, dispatches what needs dispatching, and books the rest on your schedule.

What is a home services answering service?

A home services answering service picks up the calls your crews cannot: nights, weekends, and mid-job. fonea answers in seconds with your company name, triages emergencies, books jobs on your calendar, and sends you a summary of every call, from $90 a month.

The contractor’s week

Every missed call is a job that went to a competitor

You cannot answer the phone with your hands in a system

A plumber under a sink, an HVAC tech on a rooftop unit, a roofer on a pitch. Answering means stopping work a customer is already paying for. So it rings out, and the homeowner calls the next contractor on the list. Most people do not leave a voicemail and wait.

The first company to pick up usually gets the job

The emergency calls come at the worst hours

Furnace out at 11pm in January. Water heater letting go on a Sunday. Storm damage at 6am. These are the highest-value calls you get all year, they arrive when the office is dark, and they go to whichever company a scared homeowner reaches first.

No-heat and no-water calls do not wait until Monday

A dispatcher is a full salary you may not be ready for

Covering one line through the workday, lunch, vacation, and sick days takes more than one person, and covering nights and weekends on top of that costs more again. So the phone gets covered by whoever is least busy, which during your busiest week is nobody.

One line takes more than one person to cover properly

What changes

What fonea does for a home services company

Every call answered, on the truck or off

No voicemail, no ringing out. Callers hear your company name within seconds, at 2pm on a Tuesday and at 11pm on the Fourth of July. You keep working, and the caller still gets a person-shaped answer.

Emergencies dispatched, routine calls handled

You decide what counts as an emergency: no heat, no water, an active leak, a gas smell, a downed tree on a roof. Those get transferred to the tech on call right away. Everything else is booked or logged, so the on-call phone rings only when it should.

Estimates and service calls booked while you work

Connected to Google Calendar or Microsoft 365, fonea sees real availability and puts the estimate or service call on the schedule during the conversation. No callback list, no phone tag, no lead going cold overnight.

Spanish-speaking callers on the same number

fonea detects the caller’s language and answers naturally in Spanish, English, German, French, or Italian. One number to put on the truck, no separate Spanish line, no menu to sit through with water on the floor.

Live within 24 hours

How it fits the way you already run calls

01

Keep the number that is on your truck

Landline, VoIP, or cell: fonea works through standard call forwarding on any US carrier. No porting, no new number to reprint on trucks, yard signs, and business cards.

02

Choose when it picks up

Forward everything, or only after hours, or only when the line is busy or nobody answers. Plenty of shops answer their own calls until 4pm and hand the rest to fonea. You can switch forwarding back off in seconds.

03

Tell it your emergency list and your service area

No heat, no water, active leak, gas smell, storm damage: your definitions, your escalation order, your ZIP codes. Calls outside your service area get a straight answer instead of a wasted truck roll.

04

You get the job details, not a voicemail

After every call: name, cell phone number, address, what is wrong, what was booked or promised. By email or text, ready to drop into your dispatch board.

Typical calls

How fonea handles the calls each trade actually gets

HVAC: no heat at 11pm in January

Cliente
Our furnace just quit and the house is down to 52 degrees. Can somebody come out tonight?
fonea
Let’s get that taken care of. No heat counts as an emergency, so I can put you through to the tech on call now, or book the first slot tomorrow between 8 and 10. Which do you want? Either way, let me take your address and a cell number to reach you.

The highest-value call of the winter gets dispatched instead of sitting in a voicemail box until the office opens.

Plumbing: water on the floor on a Sunday

Cliente
There’s water coming out from under the water heater and it’s spreading across the basement.
fonea
That’s an emergency and I’m connecting you to the on-call plumber right now. While it rings: if you can safely reach the shutoff on the cold line above the tank, close it. Quickly, what’s the address and the best number if we get cut off?

Escalated in under a minute with the address captured first, so nothing is lost if the call drops.

Roofing: storm damage the morning after

Cliente
We lost shingles overnight and there’s a stain coming through the ceiling in the back bedroom.
fonea
Sorry about that. Active water coming inside puts you at the front of the list. I can get an inspector out tomorrow morning between 9 and 11. Can I take the address, and your insurance carrier if you have already filed?

The morning after a storm is one long call queue. fonea takes several at once and sorts the leaks from the estimates.

Towing: stranded on the shoulder at 2am

Cliente
My car died on the shoulder of I-80 near exit 14 and I’ve got my kid with me.
fonea
I’m getting a driver on this now. Are you and your child safely away from traffic, behind a barrier if there is one? Give me your exit and direction of travel, the make and color of the car, and a cell number, and I’ll stay with you until the driver confirms.

A dispatch call where hold time is the whole product, answered instantly instead of ringing while the customer calls the next tow truck.

Pest control and landscaping: quote requests during the season rush

Cliente
I need somebody out for carpenter ants, and I’d also like a price on getting the yard cleaned up.
fonea
I can set both up. For the ants we do an inspection first, and I have Wednesday afternoon or Friday morning. For the yard I’ll take the property size and have an estimator call you with a number. What’s the address and the best time to reach you?

Seasonal work arrives in bursts. Every caller gets answered on the first ring, and nobody hits a voicemail box during the two weeks that make the year.

Salon and shop appointments: booked during a service

Cliente
Do you have anything Saturday for a cut and color? Afternoon would be better.
fonea
Saturday I have 1:15pm or 3:30pm with a colorist. Cut and color runs about two hours, so plan for that. Which one works? I’ll take your name and cell number and text you the confirmation.

A booked chair instead of a missed call, while both hands are busy with the client already in it.

Disclosure, recording, and your callers

What your customers are told, and what gets kept

Every caller is told it is a digital assistant

fonea says so at the start of every call, and the disclosure cannot be switched off. No homeowner is left thinking they reached your dispatcher, and nobody finds out afterward.

Call recording is a checkbox you control, per company and per line

Storing call recordings is on by default and can be switched off from your dashboard settings, with no support ticket and no plan change. There are two switches, a company-wide master and one per assistant, and audio is stored only when both are on. So a shop working across state lines can record its office line and not its dispatch line. Most states allow recording with one party’s consent, while California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Washington are among those requiring all parties to consent. What the switch controls is the stored audio: transcripts and call summaries still reach you either way.

No voiceprints, and no biometric profiles

fonea does not create a voiceprint and does not identify callers by their voice. Calls are transcribed and the transcripts encrypted. There is no biometric identifier being generated or stored, which is the thing Illinois BIPA is about.

Inbound calls, and data you can delete

fonea answers calls your customers place to you. TCPA restrictions govern the calls a business places, especially marketing calls and prerecorded messages. Transcripts and recordings can be deleted on request, which is what you need when a California caller exercises their CCPA or CPRA rights with you. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Frequently asked

Home services answering service: your questions

How much does an HVAC or plumber answering service cost?

fonea starts at $90 per month including 120 minutes of talk time, with no per-call charges, no setup fee, and no annual contract. The flat rate is the part that matters for a trade with a season: traditional answering services bill per call or per minute, so the week a cold snap brings forty no-heat calls is the week the invoice jumps. Here a busy week and a quiet week cost the same. Shops taking 10 to 50 calls a day usually need the $290 plan with 500 minutes.

Who answers my calls after hours?

fonea does, on the first ring, at the same price as a Tuesday afternoon. It greets the caller with your company name, works out whether this is a no-heat emergency or a routine request, and either transfers the caller to whoever is on call or books them into the first open slot. You wake up to a list of what came in and what was already handled, rather than a voicemail box you have to work through before the first job.

How does it know which calls are emergencies?

You define it, in your own words. Most shops set no heat, no water, an active leak, a gas smell, sewage backup, and storm damage with water coming inside as emergencies, and everything else as a booked or logged request. When a caller describes something on your list, fonea captures the address and a callback number first, then transfers to the tech on call, so the details survive even if the call drops. Everything else stays off the on-call phone.

Can it book jobs and estimates on my schedule?

Yes. Connected to Google Calendar or Microsoft 365, fonea sees your real availability and books the service call or the estimate while the caller is still on the line, with your job durations and buffer times respected. Every call also comes back as a structured summary by email or text with the name, cell phone number, address, and problem description, so it drops straight into whatever dispatch board you already use.

Does it work for roofing companies?

Yes, and the morning after a storm is where it earns its keep. Roofing demand arrives all at once: a hundred homeowners calling the same four contractors in the same two hours. fonea answers several at the same time on the Professional plan, separates active leaks from estimate requests, books inspections, and collects the address and the details you ask for. Nobody sits on hold, and nobody has to hang up and call your competitor because your line was busy.

Does it work for towing companies?

Yes. Towing is the case where hold time is the entire product, because a stranded caller will hang up and dial the next number in about fifteen seconds. fonea picks up instantly, takes the location, direction of travel, vehicle description, and callback number, checks the caller is somewhere safe, and passes the job to the driver on call. It answers several stranded callers at once, which a single dispatcher cannot.

Does it work for landscaping and lawn care companies?

Yes, and seasonality is the reason to bother. Spring cleanup and the first snow generate weeks of call volume that no office can staff for and no year can justify hiring against. fonea takes the quote requests, the property size, and the address, books estimates, and tells a caller when their address is outside your service area, before a truck rolls. Off-season, the same line costs the same $90 and quietly handles the trickle.

Does it work for pest control companies?

Yes. Pest control calls are urgent in a way that is emotional rather than structural: someone has just seen something in their kitchen and wants a person to answer. fonea picks up, takes the pest, the property type, and the address, books the inspection, and flags the ones you have told it to treat as same-day. Recurring service customers calling to reschedule get handled without touching a technician.

Does it work for a salon or barbershop?

Yes. A salon phone rings while both hands are in someone’s hair, which is exactly when a booking is lost. fonea answers, offers the slots your calendar actually has free, books the appointment with the right service duration, and texts a confirmation. Cancellations and reschedules come in the same way, so the chair that opens up on Saturday gets refilled instead of sitting empty.

Does it work with the phone number and calendar I already have?

Yes. fonea works through standard call forwarding, which every US carrier supports on landlines, VoIP lines, and cell phones, so the number on your trucks and your Google listing stays exactly as it is. There is no porting and no new contract to unwind. Booking connects to Google Calendar or Microsoft 365, and every call summary arrives by email or text in a form you can paste into your dispatch software.

Are callers told they are talking to an AI, and are calls recorded?

Callers are always told. fonea discloses at the start of every call that the caller is speaking with a digital assistant, and that disclosure cannot be disabled. Recording is a separate setting. Storing call recordings is on by default, and you can switch it off yourself in your dashboard settings: there is a company-wide master switch and one per assistant, and audio is stored only when both are on. Turning it off stops the audio being stored, not the service, so you still get the transcript and the call summary. Most states allow recording with one party’s consent, while California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Washington are among the states requiring all parties to consent, so the setting is yours to match to the rule that applies to you and to your callers. fonea also creates no voiceprints and no biometric profiles.

How fast can we be live?

Within 24 hours, not weeks. You keep your existing number and set up forwarding from any US carrier, which most shops do in a few minutes. Then you configure your emergency list, your service area, your job types and durations, and the questions you get every day. Forwarding can be switched back off just as fast, so trying it does not put your line at risk.
